December 5, 2023 | Corvallis, OR | Book Reading

Letitia Carson Elementary School

On December 5th of Pearl Harbor week, I visited Letitia Carson Elementary School in Corvallis, Oregon and shared a book reading with the fourth and fifth grade classes around the book Two Faces co-written by my dear friend Nina Wolpe and me.

My friend and Letitia Carson third grade teacher, Christine Gough, arranged the reading. We met in the gymnasium where some 100 plus students sat on the floor and listened as I read several segments from our book and gave some background about myself and the origins of our book.

I have been visiting with Christine’s third grade classes at Letitia Carson to share my experiences of the forced evacuation and internment of my family in a prison camp in Colorado during World War II since the spring of 2017. Today Christine asked for a show of hands of the fourth and fifth graders if they had experienced my Camp Amache talk in one of her third-grade classes, and a goodly number of hands went up. I expressed my pleasure in meeting with them once again.

The publication of Two Faces gave me the opportunity to visit Letitia Carson and read my family’s evacuation and internment story from the point of view of two ten-year-old friends lived through that time, sharing more of what I had been thinking and feeling.

Today was a fun day with a great bunch of ten and twelve-year-olds.
